Healthcare
If you are worried about the standard of healthcare in Korea don’t! Although Korea does not
have a nationalised healthcare system you will never go without proper care and treatment.
There are numerous hospitals and clinics which you can attend and be seen by an English
speaking physician almost immediately without the need for an appointment. Koreans are
obsessed with their health and you will be pleasantly surprised with the treatment you receive.
All schools are required by law to provide their teachers with medical insurance. The most
common health insurance cover that schools provide is National Health Insurance plan (NHI).
Your school will contribute 50% towards the monthly premium and you will pay the other 50%
each month out of your salary. Currently teachers are paying around 60,000 Won (£30) every
month.
Your school may decided however to take out a private health insurance policy with a private
insurance company. If this is the case then you and your school will pay a one-premium at the
start of your 12 month contract bearing the cost 50/50.
Even though you have health insurance if you get sick then you will have to pay a contribution
towards the treatment. However, you will be pleased to know that Healthcare in Korea is cheap
so you will be paying next to nothing for the treatment you receive. For example, a trip to the
24 hour doctor at 5am in the morning which included an examination, injection and tablets for
3 days cost me a total of £5.
You will never be more than a 5-10 minute walk away from a pharmacy providing cheap
medicine, tablets, and creams.
Dentists are also cheap and provide exceptional services. It was not until I went to Korea that
I actually received a proper scale and clean. For £30 the dentist examined my teeth and gave
me a scale and clean lasting thirty minutes leaving my teeth shinning white and free of plaque.
Be careful however, Korean dentists are eager to fill your mouth with metal, just take a look at
your student’s teeth!
NB. Non-emergency dental treatment is not covered under your health insurance plan.
